Having continued to read after this project, I find myself examining texts much more closely, with the intent of unearthing the ‘core’ of its intent. Truly, I feel that applying a critical knowledge to any art form, whether it be film, radio, television, theatre, art or literature, furthers the comprehension of the medium, which in turn allows for complete enjoyment. Having been pushed to dig deep into a text, and pull out significant moments, quotations, symbols, motifs, themes and characters, I believe I understand Lam’s intentions with Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures much better. One of the greatest skills I feel I have honed from this project is the ability and keenness to analyze literature much more critically. There is lots of opportunity to develop adventuring skills and find weapons and other gear to aid them in their quest. In this module, raids on their village by beastmen prompt the PC villagers to venture into their ruined fortress to try to end the menace and save their village. They face terrible danger, and IF they survive (most won't), the SURVIVORS get to choose character classes and become more traditional RPG characters. They start as everyday folk - peasants, usually - farmers and blacksmiths and beggars and such. Basically - the PCs dop not start out as heroes, with a class like Warrior or Wizard. But Sailors is often lauded as THE example, the ULTIMATE example, of the 0-level "funnel" that DCC RPG introduced. The only DCC RPG module I've run more often is "The Portal Under the Stars," which was included in the Core Rulebook. I've run this module more times than I can count, at this point, both in home campaigns and in Road Crew/Convention settings.
